Rain.. rain.. is there enough yet?

The rain gauge at the Community Garden has registered 4.25 inches of rain since we started seeing showers several days ago. That one southeast corner is still holding water but I will get it strawed this week to absorb some of this lovely rain.

It is truly amazing to see all the plants perked up and growing and flowering after this rain and the seeds that had just barely poked their heads out of the ground with Duane hauling 450 gallon tanks of water and putting it on the garden and then setting up the rain barrels so we could spot water the plants that were suffering the most.

I am hoping the cistern may have water in it again after all the rain but will not hold our breath waiting to see if this happens. The fruit trees have been hanging in there while I have hauled gallons of water to them and can now add additional mulch around all the trees to hold the rain we do have in the ground to support them.

The kale, that had been in a growing holding pattern, is flourishing and the squash plants are standing up tall and have loads of flowers on them. Will make every effort during the next week to replant where things died and add some new seeds to the wet ground with the hope that we can get the plants up and then get them growing as we move into July and potential hot weather and struggle for plants. The tomatoes have struggled through being drowned, replanted, cooked by the sun and heat, and now are really trying hard to get themselves moving toward growth and development of tomatoes for all of us.

I am still looking to borrow a stock tank to make manure tea to fertilize the garden... this will be a borrow only and it will be returned to you clean. A small hole or two will only let the manure tea leak out near the tomatoes so this isn't a barrier.. big holes.. won't work.

We still have some rain barrels left so if you are interested, call 27-456-6132 and leave a message and I will call you to set up a time to come learn and take one home for $10.00.
